Ben Stokes started his dance training at the age of three. His early years were at Glenda Benton Academy of Dance where he learnt the importance of theatricality, performance and developed his technique foundations under the expert tutelage of Glenda, Mitch and Chris. He moved to the city at the age of 14 and studied at Newtown Performing Arts High School and Brent Street Studios where he got to work with industry legends the likes of Cameron Mitchell, Matt Lee, Jacqui Howard and Kelley Abbey.

 

In 2002 Ben opened Commotion School of Performing Arts in the NVPS Hall, running dance classes on Wednesday afternoons. Starting with just 60 students, the studio grew fast as news spread locally about a fresh young dance teacher with innovative fresh choreography. As Commotion grew, Ben's experience and passion grew with it. His routines were soon achieving great results in competitions and his unique fun approach to dance education was gaining attention. It didn't take long for Commotion to become one of the most reputable and popular dance schools in Sydney.

 

Ben's choreography has won many elite dance competitions around Australia. His students have gone on to great successes, with graduates performing internationally and across the country. Ben was one of the creators of Project Dance Australia. Ben is also currently the director of the Australian Dance Challenge, Kick Eisteddfod, Stoked!Creative and most recently Studio Savvy - where Ben mentors fellow dance studio owners and coaches dance teachers from around the globe.

 

As a choreographer, Ben Stokes has created routines for the Sugapop Girls, Go Seek, Dapper Crew (Australia's Got Talent Semi Finalists) and he also choreographed the series-winning routine for Lil' Banditz Krew on Channel 10's Young Talent Time. In 2013 he choreographed for Nickelodeon's Slime Fest and the Young Talent Time Live Tour, and choreographed dancers for a Jai Waetford performance. Ben is the managing and artistic director of Commotion Performing Arts.

Ashleigh Giles started dancing at the age of 9 at Commotion School of Performing Arts under the direction of Ben Stokes. Excelling in all styles of dance, it wasn't long before she began assistant teaching younger dance classes.

 

Ash continued to develop her skills at Commotion as an elite Troupe performer and a competitive soloist, whist studying at Campbelltown Performing Arts high School doing Dance and Circus Arts. In 2010, Ash completed her Certificate IV in Performing Arts at Brent Street Studios Full Time Course.

 

Since graduating, Ash has continued to grow as a dancer doing regular pro classes, elite dance courses, travelling around the world to train in New York, L.A, Italy and London. Ash worked with internationally renowned Erica Sobel as a cast member of the Collide Dance Company in their Australian Tour. She was also a featured dancer in the 7 Vies national tour. Ash has taught at a number of dance workshops and open classes around Australia and in the UK. She's highly in demand for guest teaching and choreography, having worked for a variety of dance and performing arts schools.

 

Ash teachers a large variety of classes at Commotion Performing Arts from Ready Set Dance to the Seniors. She also choreographs many of the competition routines and is the soloist-coordinator and Assistant Creative Director. Ash's enormous passion for dance and fun energy is contagious and makes her one of our most popular dance instructions with all of our age groups.

Jordan Grant is a proud member of Phly Crew, an incredible Australian dance company well known for their entertaining blend of comedy and hip hop. He has been a featured performer and choreographer in their multiple theatre productions as well as a co-choreographer for Phly Crew’s consecutive World Of Dance Australia wins.

 

Most recently, Jordan was fortunate enough to assist in choreographing Guy Sebastian’s latest music videos ‘Choir’ and ‘Let Me Drink’, dancing in the latter, and to dance beside artists the likes of Vera Blue at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Opening Ceremony. 2019 also saw Jordan as a season dancer on the inaugural season of The Masked Singer Australia, as well as appearing in the latest Sydney Metro TVC.

 

Jordan has had the pleasure of being cast in The Dream Dance Company’s ‘The Secret Society’ choreographed by Candace Brown and produced by Marko Panzic, ’Project Home: Gold Coast’ and ‘Project Home: Singapore’ choreographed/produced by Chris Martin and Larkin Poynton, ‘Una Palabra’ choreographed/produced by Neale Whittaker and has just finished performing in ‘Found’, choreographed by Stephen Tannos, as a member of the We.Are Dance Project.

Shannon has been dancing and acquiring experience in urban/hip-hop and commercial dancing for fourteen years with Fresh Funk, one of Canberra’s exceptionally recognised urban dance programs, part of the Tuggeranong Arts Centre (TAC). Shannon’s natural ability and maturity was recognised immediately and she was offered every developmental opportunity available since she was quite young. She participated in additional projects, choreographic initiatives, crews, and public performances.

 

She was invited into the Master class and offered a teaching position for the program when she was 16 years old. She was teaching multiple classes and age-groups on a weekly basis as well as holiday programs and other workshops from 2009. She quickly became one of the leading forces of Fresh Funk and indeed the Canberra dance community, heavily sought-after for choreography, teaching, outreach programs at schools, and performing. She is respected. Her work ethic stands out as much as the work itself.

 

Shannon has travelled to Los Angeles and New York for dance training with some world-renowned choreographers, including such names as Andre Fuentes, Kyle Hanagami and Erica Sobol. She has also been selected by such choreographers as Willdabeast, Andye J and Tony Tzar to perform their choreography in major performance pieces both in Australia and in LA. In more recent years Shannon progressed to obtain training in classical, contemporary and Jazz with Ev & Bow Full-time Dance Training Centre under the guidance of Sarah Boulter and Lisa Bowmer, completing her Certificate IV in dance in 2016.

 

Having a natural passion for choreography and teaching, Shannon’s work has been specifically requested by numerous dance training centers in Australia such as Brent Street Performing Arts Academy, Planet Dance, Dance Editorial’s touring show ‘7 Vices’ and was added to the teaching faculty for the Australian Dance Festival for 2017/2018 also contributing a piece to the N.E.X.T Choreographer initiative. Recently she has danced commercially for Macklemore, Motif Productions (numerous including Olivia Foai’s recent music video) Jess Smith Productions (T20 Cricket), JTown Creative, Beat the Streets (GABs Beer Festival), Hair Expo 2017 (Next hair), Peugeot and Glue Fashion store.

Kristel started performing at the tender age of 2 years and hasn’t stopped since. Her love of musical theatre drove her to obtain “triple threat” status studying dance, voice and acting at various local studios including Glenda Yee School of Dance prior to completing a full time Diploma in Performing Arts at ED5 International.

 

Studying various styles of dance including jazz, ballet, Broadway and her favourite style tap, she completed many formal examinations leading to a successful teaching career spanning the last 21 years. She has been part of the Commotion teaching staff since 2008.

 

Some of her professional credits include dancing on Australian Idol with Marcia Hines, NRL Grand Final with Vanessa Amorosi, Countdown Spectacular, The Musical Theatre Project with Kelley Abbey, Christmas in July Burlesque Show (lead singer) & singer/dancer for Princess Cruises touring the United States and Pacific Ocean. TVC’s and featured spots on TV dramas such as Home & Away gave Kristel the opportunity to become familiar with being in front of the camera. Most recently Kristel has enjoyed performances on the musical theatre stage in local productions including The Producers (Usherette), Spamalot (Lady of the Lake) & Legally Blonde (Elle Woods).

Alexander was born in Sydney. Alexander trained at Joanne Williamson Dance Academy in Sydney from 2007-2016 in the genres of contemporary, classical ballet, jazz and musical theatre. Alex completed R.A.D examinations Pre-Primary to Advanced Foundation.

 

From 2011-2016, Alex attended and graduated Newtown High School of the Performing Arts receiving the Higher School Certificate. Furthering his training and knowledge in contemporary dance, Alex began fulltime training with Sydney Dance Company’s Pre- Professional Year in 2017, receiving a Diploma in Dance Elite Performance. In 2018, Alex completed a second year with Sydney Dance Company’s Pre-Professional Year, receiving an Advanced Diploma in Dance Elite Performance.

 

Within the two years, Alex worked with many artists including Rafael Bonachela, Lucas Jervies, Rani Luther, Yeji Kim, Theo Clinkard, Triśtan Carter, Tamas Moricz, Kristina Chan, Dean Walsh, Iratxe Ansa and Igor Bacovich. In 2019, Alex was contracted as a trainee dancer with Sydney Dance Company, performing in Sydney and touring nationally across Australia performing works including; ‘WOOF’ by Melanie Lane, ‘Neon Aether’ by Gabrielle Nankivell, ‘6 Breaths’ by Rafael Bonachela, ‘Us 50’ by Gideon Obarzanek, ‘Arise’ by Ariella Casu and ‘Zero’ by Josh Mu.

Chiara began her training at the Glenda Yee School of Dance, and went on to graduate from the renowned ‘ED5 International’.

 

Upon graduating, she was cast in the Monsters Live – Rock & Roll Show at Universal Studios Japan. Chiara’s other credits include: Wayne Scott Kermond’s Candy Man; So You Think You Can Dance supporting Kelly Rowland; X-Factor Australia, where she competed with girl group ‘Mosaic’; the Sydney Mardi Gras; the NRL Grand Final; The Voice Australia, and television campaigns for Big Brother & Lynx. Alongside her brother Daniel, Chiara will debut their cabaret Siblingship at the Hayes Theatre and Chapel Off Chapel this coming October.

After graduating from Commotion Performing Arts, Issy completed her Diploma of Performing Arts at Brent Street in Sydney Australia with a role of honour.

 

Issy is represented by Jeep management and was a featured as a dancer in Guy Sebastian’s film clip “Choir”. She also performed with Guy on The Voice Australia, in his performance “Choir”. Issy was awarded NRG International Prodigy in Sydney where she headed to the United States to work with many American leading choreographers such as Rustin Matthews and Mallauri Esquibel. Issy was recently featured in Samantha Jade’s film clip ’In The Morning’ and was also a featured dancer at the Fashion Launch for P.E. Nation and H&M at Bondi Icebergs. Issy’s commercial credits include Guy Sebastian, Timomatic, Samantha Jade, Jai Waterford and Marquee Sydney. 

As a teacher and choreographer Issy is in high demand, working across Sydney at some of Australia's most reputable dance studios. Recently Issy partnered with her sister Elly to create Dance Classes Online, which provided online tutorials to thousands of students across Australia. 

Emily started dance training at the age of 3 at Millennium Dance Productions, she moved around to many different dance schools until the age of 9 where she started dancing at Commotion Performing Arts. She trained in Ballet, Jazz, Hip hop, Contemporary, lyrical. and Tap.

 

Her passion for dance quickly turned into a love for teaching. Emily started out as an Assistant Dance teacher in 2016 and has continued to flourish as a teacher post her graduation from Commotion Performing Arts in 2017. 

In 2018, Emily continued to further her dance training by completing a Diploma in Dance (Elite Performance) at Brent Street Studios and is excited to share her love and passion for dance onto the younger generation.

 

Like many of our awesome teachers, Chloe grew up dancing at Commotion. Trained in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Lyrical and Acrobatics - Chloe has developed into an outstanding dancer, with a huge amount of talent and a deep knowledge of her craft. Oozing with Commotion pride and equipped with a great understanding of our unique culture and dance education philosophies, Chloe has completed her dance teacher training with us, and has been working as an assistant teacher under the mentorship of our director for over 5 years.

 

Chloe’s performance experience goes well beyond the standard list of eisteddfods with her Commotion team. Chloe has performed for Project Dance in a number of productions. She is a member of the esteemed Pioneers Crew. In 2018 Chloe’s Hip Hop Crew “Click” came 2nd in Australia in the Battlegrounds Hip Hop Championships. Chloe has been a featured performer in the NSW School Spectacular. And Chloe has performed in various choreographer showcases at the Australian Dance Festival.

 

We are so proud of Chloe’s journey from student to teacher. Her enthusiastic passion for dance and her dedication to helping young dancers build their confidence and grow their talent is inspiring. As a budding choreographer Chloe shows her greatest talent, and we look forward to seeing her continue to shine. Amongst our students, Chloe is well loved and it is because she pours her heart and soul into every class that she teaches.
